Topaz May Be Toothless but He Has a Big Heart

I thought I had a good home, but when I developed medical issues, the people who had me couldn't take care of them. I went to The Rescue House to get a chance to get the care I needed. And the doctors found out that I had a condition called stomatitis. This meant I needed to have all my teeth removed because they were hurting me.

Once I got that taken care of and recovered, I came to The Cat Cafe. It took a while for me to get used to things, so I spent most of my time in the retreat. But as I felt more comfortable, I started to venture out and now you'll find me in the cat room except when I want to sleep. I'm a smart cat who knows he won't be bothered in the retreat, so when it's sleepy time, I go there.

Come and meet me and see if a toothless cat with a big heart belongs in your home.

Our mother was pregnant with us when she was found in a cage in an abandoned home. Fortunately, the caretaker got her to The Rescue House, where she gave birth to us. We were adopted, but things didn't work out and we came back. Now, we're here at The Cat Cafe entertaining visitors with our dashes around the cat room and loud meows at the things we see outside the window. When we settle in, we like to be up high. You'll see the two of us in the top of the eight foot tree or in a high cubby. See if we're the perfect pair for your home and we'll be sure to tell you why.

Adopting a cat can be a life-changing experience, especially for families with children. Not only do cats bring companionship, joy, and a sense of responsibility to young kids, but they also help foster empathy, routine, and respect for living beings. At The Cat Café , we believe every child should have the chance to bond with a furry friend, and with the proper preparation, the cat-kid connection can be truly magical. If you’re a family thinking about bringing home a cat, this guide will walk you through key tips to ensure a smooth, safe, and loving transition for everyone, two-legged and four-pawed alike. Why Cats Make Great Family Pets Cats can be excellent additions to family life: Low-maintenance (but loving): Cats are more independent than dogs, making them great for busy households. Teaches responsibility: Feeding, grooming, and playtime can become part of your child’s daily routine. Comfort and companionship: Many children find emotional support in a pet’s calm presence. Promotes empathy and care: Helping a child learn how to treat animals with kindness can have a lifelong impact. Choosing the Right Cat for a Family with Kids Not every cat is the same, and not every cat is the best fit for a home with young children. Here’s what to consider: ✅ Look for a Cat with a Calm, Social Personality Cats who are affectionate, tolerant, and enjoy being around people are ideal for families. Cats that have been exposed to children or loud environments (like those in a cat café) are more likely to adapt well to your home. ✅ Consider Age and Energy Level Kittens are fun and energetic, but they can also be fragile and require constant supervision. Adult cats often have more stable personalities and may already be used to being handled. Senior cats can be mellow companions, especially for calm or older children. ✅ Talk to Staff or Rescue Partners At The Cat Café, we get to know our cats well, and we can help guide you toward a good match based on your household, children’s ages, and lifestyle. Preparing Your Kids for a Cat Bringing a cat into your family is an excellent opportunity for teaching and learning. Help your kids understand how to be gentle and respectful companions: Talk About Boundaries Explain that cats are not toys, they’re living beings with feelings. Teach your child to: Approach slowly and calmly Avoid sudden movements or loud noises Let the cat come to them first Recognize signs the cat wants space (ears back, tail flicking, hissing) Practice “Petting Manners” Use stuffed animals to demonstrate how to gently pet a cat (on the head, cheeks, and back) and avoid tail-pulling or rough play. Read Books About Cats Together Age-appropriate books about cat care or animal friendships can help kids build empathy and set expectations for their new family member. Preparing Your Home for a Family-Friendly Cat Setting up a comfortable, safe space for your new feline friend is key to a smooth transition: Create a Quiet "Safe Zone" Cats, especially new ones, need a quiet area where they can retreat. Set up a room with: A cozy bed Food and water A litter box Toys and a scratching post Make this area off-limits to kids at first so the cat can adjust at their own pace. Provide Enrichment for All Cats and kids both love to play! Have a basket of safe cat toys, like wand toys, balls, or feather chasers, that your child can use under supervision to engage and bond with the cat. Be Patient, Relationships Take Time It’s essential to allow both the cat and your child to develop trust gradually. Don’t force interactions. Celebrate small milestones like the cat sniffing your child’s hand, curling up nearby, or initiating play. And remember, accidents or misunderstandings are bound to happen. Use these as gentle learning moments rather than reasons to scold or give up. Visit Before You Adopt: Try the Cat Café Experience If your family is still deciding whether to adopt or just wants to see how kids and cats interact, The Cat Café is a great place to start. Here, your children can: Observe cats in a calm, natural setting Learn how to approach and interact respectfully See the wide range of cat personalities Possibly even fall in love with a future furry family member! Conclusion: Building a Lifelong Bond With a bit of preparation, adopting a cat into a family with children can be an enriching experience. Kids learn compassion, patience, and responsibility, while cats gain loving companions who grow up alongside them. At The Cat Café , we’re here to help you find the right feline friend and make the adoption experience joyful for the whole family. When I was a kitten, I got adopted and thought I had a forever home. But when my person got married, we learned that the other person in the home was severely allergic. They found me a home with a family member, but that person doesn't really like cats. They took care of me but they wanted to find me a home with a true feline fancier. The Rescue House found a place for me and then they brought me here. I'm older than many of the cats here, so I'm calmer and it takes me longer to warm up to strangers. But give me a chance and I'll show you my friendly side and snuggle with you. Come by and see if you're the one to give me the forever home I've been looking for.

My life kind of resembles a country and western song, and I like to sing to visitors and other cats so my name is fitting. I lived in the attic of an artist's studio for a while, and my fur got as dirty and dusty as a a cowboy's hat after a cattle drive. But when I made my way to The Rescue House and a foster home, I showed that I'm quite the showman. And I've continued it as a member of The Cat Cafe clowder. When I'm in the mood, I'll sprint across the floor of the cat room, often with a little yowl to announce my intentions. I've become friends with most of the cats here, including the resident grumpy old man Leo. As you can imagine, I need to go to a home where there is another playful and active cat. If that's yours, I'll gladly sing my hellos to you.

I was living in the desert in Imperial County when the shelter there took me in. But I spent a lot of time in the shelter and didn't find a home. I was happy there, but when the chance came to head to the coast, I was happy to be selected. Within minutes of arriving at The Cat Cafe, I was in the cat room exploring. I started making friends with the other cats in the clowder and the people who come to see us as well right away. And I haven't stopped. You should visit me. I'm sure to entertain you and you may want to take me home.

When I was found outside, I had a medical condition that needed surgery. You see, the bones around my sternum were collapsed and it meant I was having a challenging time taking care of myself. The surgery was successful and after recovering at a foster home for The Rescue House, I came here. I'm still figuring things out, so I don't spend as much time in the cat room as the others. But if I'm out, I love to give head bonks to people who are nice to me. I am so affectionate that it's hard to get photos or videos of me. Come by and see if I treat you to an appearance, along with head bonks and purrs.

There’s nothing quite like the cozy, calming vibe of a cat café—purring cats, the gentle aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and a laid-back space that feels like a little slice of heaven. But what if you could bring that peaceful café magic into your own home? Whether you're a devoted cat parent or just dreaming of those cat café vibes between visits to Cat & Craft, we’ve got the ultimate DIY guide to help you create the perfect at-home cat café experience. Let’s blend your love for cats and coffee into a relaxing ritual that you (and your feline friends) can enjoy every day. ☕ Step 1: Set the Mood with a Coffee Ritual Cat cafés are as much about the coffee as they are about the cats. Here’s how to elevate your home-brew game: Upgrade Your Brew Method Choose a method that fits your style and brings you joy—whether it’s a pour-over, French press, AeroPress, or espresso machine. The process of making your coffee can be a soothing part of your morning ritual. Pro Tip: Support local! Buy small-batch or locally roasted beans to recreate that café-quality flavor at home. Create a Coffee Station Designate a cute corner or cart for your coffee gear. Include: Your favorite mug(s) A jar of beans or grounds Brewing tools A small plant or framed quote for ambiance A sprinkle of cat-themed decor, naturally 🐾 Try a Café-Inspired Drink Menu Recreate some café classics—or invent your own feline-themed brews! Purr-over Coffee Mew-chiato (Macchiato with a touch of vanilla) Catpuccino (Cappuccino with cinnamon) Kitten Cold Brew (Cold brew with a splash of oat milk) Make it a weekend treat to experiment with different flavors, syrups, or latte art (even if it’s just a heart that vaguely looks like a paw print). 🐱 Step 2: Make Your Home a Cat Paradise Your cat deserves the VIP lounge experience too! Here’s how to create an enriching and comfortable environment they’ll love to hang out in—especially while you sip your coffee nearby. Design a Cozy Cat Corner Choose a sunny window or quiet space to create a chill-out zone for your cat: Add a soft blanket or bed Place a scratching post or cardboard scratcher nearby Use a window perch or shelf to give them a view of the outside world Tuck in a few favorite toys or even a tunnel for variety Bonus: Add a diffuser with pet-safe calming scents (like lavender or chamomile) for a spa-like touch. Vertical Space is Key Cats love to climb and observe from above. Install wall-mounted cat shelves, a tall cat tree, or a multi-level condo to give them a sense of ownership over the space. Rotate Toys for Enrichment Just like we get bored of the same TV shows, cats can tire of the same toys. Keep things fresh by rotating a few new toys each week—wand toys, puzzle feeders, and interactive balls can keep them entertained while you sip your brew. 🛋️ Step 3: Set the Vibe The atmosphere of a cat café is warm, peaceful, and inviting—here’s how to bring that same energy to your home: Soft Lighting: Use warm string lights, table lamps, or candles (battery-operated for safety!) to set a cozy mood. Background Music: Create a relaxing playlist of soft jazz, acoustic coffeehouse tunes, or ambient cat café sounds (yes, they exist!). Comfy Seating: Add cushions, throws, or even a floor pouf to make your cat café space cozy for both of you. 📖 Step 4: Unplug and Be Present One of the best parts of visiting a cat café is the chance to slow down and unplug. Make your at-home café experience screen-free, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Read a book or magazine Journal with your cat curled up beside you Simply sit and sip while watching your cat nap or play This quiet, intentional time is good for your mental health and strengthens your bond with your cat. 🐾 Bonus: Invite a Friend (Human or Feline!) You’re already halfway to a full-blown cat café if you've got multiple cats. You could even host a “Caturday Brunch” with a fellow cat-loving friend—coffee, pastries, and plenty of purrs included. 🏠 Conclusion: Cat Café Vibes, Anytime You Want Recreating the cat café experience at home is easier than you think—and it’s a great way to slow down, appreciate the little things, and spend quality time with your favorite furry companion. Whether it’s a full Sunday morning ritual or a simple weekday coffee break, blending your love of cats and coffee is always a win. Want more inspiration? I'm a small boy, but if you come in to meet me, you'll see why it took the staff at a Costco the full day to be able to get me on my way to a better life than their parking lot. I love to run around and play with toys. If you're not careful, you might find that I think your shoelaces are toys. When I'm not doing that, I sometimes will find a toy to play with on my own. I've got two speeds, on or off. And when I'm done playing, I like to nap under a chair or in an enclosed space. Because I'm small, sometimes, people can't find me. Come by and meet me and see which mode I'm in.

One of the first things you'll notice about us is the striking markings we both have. That's because we're bengal cats. And because of our age and how strongly we've attached ourselves to the people who work here, we're not available for adoption. Jacey was living in a home with a veterinarian, but when one of the children went off to boarding school, she found ways to entertain herself. One of those ways was to sneak out of the house to climb onto the roof of the home. Her person realized this couldn't continue, and sadly sought a home for her. She made her way to San Diego and has been a resident cat for many years now. You'll notice some scarring on the left side of her face due to radiation therapy that took care of a nasal lymphoma. Despite her age and the cancer treatment, Jacey still runs around and plays like a cat ten years younger than her. Leo found himself abandoned in an empty house when his people moved. Because he was left behind after eight years, he was depressed when he arrived at The Cat Cafe. He didn't eat enough to keep his weight at a healthy level initially. But as he learned to trust the people on staff, he began to eat enough to sustain himself. That's why the veterinarians said Leo should stay with us at The Cat Cafe. While neither of these cats are adoptable, they're good ambassadors for their breed and they give return visitors a pair of cats they can look forward to seeing.
